North Babylon Mail Carrier In Critical Condition

U.S. Postal Service Proposes Cutting 120,000 Jobs

April 11, 2017 started out as a normal Tuesday for North Babylon mail carrier Mike Martinez. Martinez was loading mail into his bag outside his truck on Prairie Drive when he was hit by a Lincoln Continental. The driver then struck Mike’s postal service truck and a fire hydrant before slamming into a telephone pole. Mike was critically injured, lost his leg, and currently remains in critical condition at Stony Brook Hospital.

As Martinez was airlifted to the hospital, the driver of the Lincoln remained on the scene and was later charged with wreckless driving.

Since the accident, Long Islanders have come together to raise money for Mike’s hospital bills. His gofundme page has been active for 2 days, and raised over $24,000. The page states, “His wife and two daughters can use this money to get by until any sort of financial compensation comes from the postal service and or workers comp.”

It’s clear Mike Martinez is loved by the community, as many donations on the page are paired with loving comments from people who live in the area where Mike delivered mail.
